We love our big, beautiful world, and it’s easier to help protect than you’d think. Small lifestyle changes can have big effects on the Earth’s health. Here are some simple tips to be a citizen of the world.
Let ‘em hang!
By hang drying your clothes instead of putting them in the dryer, you can reduce your household’s carbon footprint by 2,400 pounds a year. Plus, clothes tend to last longer when not put under the stress of the dryer which means you don’t need to buy new ones as often! Win win! There are so many ways to get creative with your clothesline, whether outside or in, and the whole family can have fun putting up clothes. Craft idea: Paint clothespins!
Who turned out the lights?
It’s easy to forget to turn off the light switch when leaving a room, but did you know that even a small amount of electricity can result in large carbon emissions? It’s especially important to flip the switch off if you have incandescent light bulbs, which produce more heat in order to give off light. Want to be more green? Change out those incandescents for LED or CFL light bulbs, which are not only more eco-friendly, but last longer too!
Love your leftovers
Every year the world produces 72 billion pounds of food waste, most of which ends up in landfills and incinerators. The best ways to help lower this number? Don’t throw away your leftovers. Instead, store them in reusable containers or donate them to a hunger-relief organization. If you have spoiled food, the best way to get rid of them is to compost! Composting is not only great for the environment, but for your garden as well.

Reusable water bottles, bags, containers, straws and more! Single-use plastics are incredibly harmful to the environment, and many end up in the world’s oceans, filling the sea with tiny plastic particles. Americans alone throw out 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour! If you do use plastic, make sure that you can recycle it by looking for the recycling symbol with any of the numbers 1-7 stamped in the center.
